Our Favourite Canadian Films Ever Made

Canada’s 150th birthday is upon us, and to help celebrate, we’re going to put our feet up and watch some of our favourite Canadian films. Not just movies made in Canada, but movies that are full of Canadiana. Movies that make you feel proud to be part of this country and everything it stands for.

Maudie: The newest film on our list, might just be the best of the bunch. We reviewed this film back in April during it’s Canadian premiere, and it’s gone on to become an independent hit. It follows the true story of Maud Lewis, an arthritic Nova Scotia woman who becomes a Canadian artistic icon.

Jesus of Montreal: A group of Montreal actors take on the Catholic Church in this 1989 film that found itself nominated for an Oscar. If you haven’t seen this satirical drama you really should as it is still relevant today.

Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner: Canada’s vast arctic expanse has been home to the Inuit for centuries, and they’ve had their own stories and legends passed down from generation to generation. Atanarjuat tells one such legend about a warrior taking on an evil spirit.

The Rocket: You had to know a hockey movie would make a list about Canadian films, and The Rocket is one of the best. It’s a biography of Montreal Canadiens legend Maurice “Rocket” Richard and his rise to the top of the sport.

One Week: What would you do if you found out you only had one week to live? This film follows the story of a Toronto man who is given just that diagnosis, and decides to buy a motorbike and travel cross country to Tofino, British Columbia on it.

Goin’ Down The Road: And to conclude our list we can’t forget to include this film about two men travelling from the Maritimes to Toronto, where they hope to find a better life. It’s perhaps the most famous Canadian film of all time.
